To the ancient Hawaiians, surfing was a

the 1966 classic features extensive photographs and
illustrations, a new introduction by the authors, and
articles by Mark Twain and Jack London recounting their
observations on surfing.

Longboarder's Start-Up
by Doug Werner
Doug Werner has written a wonderful
beginner's guide to anything and everything to do with
longboarding. An extremely easy read, Longboarder's
Start-Up has photos and descriptive text that literally
walks you through the basics of longboarding. Doug's
casual style and crisp humour give the feel of receiving
a world-class surfing lesson from your local surf bum.
Altogether, this is a great addition to your library.
Don't forget to bring it on your next beach trip.
A Beginner's Guide to Surfing
by Doug Werner
Another great title by the legend Doug
Werner. Over 70 photographs combined with easy to read
text add up to a basic understanding of what is involved
in surfing. Gets you from dry land to the standup
position and covers surfing "rules". Most
surfing magazines assume you have surfed. This book is
for the very beginner.

Inviting, colourful action photographs lure
the reader into two informative books. The guides include
brief histories of the sports along with discussion of
proper equipment, skills, and safety
Surfriders : In Search of the
Perfect Wave
by Matt Warshaw, Ed M. Warshaw
Surfriders is an excellent blend of history,
commentary, and contemporary writing about the sport and
pastime of surfing. The photography is unbelievable and
the prose engaging. The content covers everything from
the beginnings of surfing with The Duke to the pressures
of competition. There is an excellent section about Big
Wave riding and even a look at surf culture in film.
(What was the real deal with The Endless Summer?) This is
a great book to experience, especially when the swell is
off and there is no other surf in sight.
